The “back to school” season fills me with nostalgia. I’m always more reflective this time of year—I’ve spent the past hour journaling about how I want to spend the next year. Dreaming and planning is a favorite past time of mine, which has evolved from the vision board that I kept in my college years to the more purpose-filled planning that I’m doing right now. These are hard times, so how will I make an impact?
This is also a horny time of year, no doubt. In my childhood, I dreamt of seeing longstanding crushes for the first time after a summer growth spurt. Later, it was seeing the hot teacher again, or planning a new outfit that didn’t quite meet the school’s dress code.
School-based fantasies are part of our culture. There are student/teacher sexual relationships in movies and TV shows like Wild Things, Easy A, The Piano Teacher, Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, and Election. In other movies and music videos, the sexy teacher or sexy school girl trope is played up for our enjoyment, like Bad Teacher, Van Halen’s ‘Hot for Teacher,’ and of course, ‘…Baby One More Time.’ (There are so many more to choose from, so please leave your favorite in the comments below!)
Teacher/student crimes regularly make news, sometimes for years on end like the Mary Kay Letourneau story. Sometimes the scandal is local (we all have one creepy teacher who we all gossiped about, right?). So why is this a cultural obsession? Both the scandals and the fantasies?
There is no specific term for a teacher fetish, but it falls under the BDSM umbrella. Teacher/student BDSM scenes are one of the most popular role play scenarios and a very popular porn category. It makes sense: a teacher/student relationship naturally falls into the dom/sub dynamic. Relationships with teachers are forbidden in real life, and therefore taboo. There are obvious storylines about teaching or learning lessons, punishment, and sexy school uniforms.
Currently in schools in the U.S., the administration is demanding that the states remove all references to “gender ideology” in sex ed or lose their federal funding. A couple of weeks ago, I wrote an overview of the history of sex education in America and how we got to this place. I think most of sex education as adults is dismantling what we learned as kids, including the limiting beliefs, myths, and misconceptions. We’ll have even more work to do in the future.
That’s what’s making this back to school season even more complex for me. How can I be best of service? How can this newsletter be of service for all of us? Look out for some growth in the next few months. I’m really happy you’ll be here for it. Class is in session!
