Hey horny readers! It’s a holiday week, so this one’s a quickie.
As always, thank you so much for reading the ADULT SEX ED newsletter! If you’re enjoying it, please share with friends, so they can be hilariously informed.
Adult Sex Ed comedically challenges why we think what we think about sex. In case you’re new, I’m Dani Faith Leonard, a comedy writer, film producer, and performer. In 2018, I started a comedy show called Adult Sex Ed and launched this newsletter last year. Each week, I take a fun deep dive into a topic that I’ve been researching. Want to know more? Read the whole description on substack here.
Ready to get a little smarter? Okay, let’s go!
As I said, this one is a quickie because:
#1—It’s a holiday week.
#2—It’s time for a check in!
We have a bunch of new subscribers (hi!) and it’s been a while since I wrote about how this all came to be. First of all, Adult Sex Ed started off as a live comedy show and this newsletter grew out of my desire to explore these topics deeper and more frequently. Started in 2018, the show has been performed in NY (Caveat), LA (Dynasty Typewriter) and around the country with leading comedian guests. There are two shows coming up this Spring! And even though it would be ideal to meet you in person, you can stream the first one from anywhere. Ticket links below (and read further to find out more about the show.
May 15th in New York City or *streaming anywhere* with guests Gabe Mollica, Ayanna Dookie, Calvin Cato & More!
June 7th in Los Angeles with guests Dylan Adler Joanna Hausmann, Jeena Bloom & More!
Ok friends, here’s what you can expect. At each live show, I invite a few of the funniest people I know to tell stories about their own educations and the lessons they had to learn the hard way. Then, I lead the audience through “lessons” on how these beliefs about sex came to be and impacted our culture (sort of like I do here every week!). Part stand-up, part John Oliver-style deep dives, all live and brand new each time.
Past guests include Gianmarco Soresi, Josh Gondelman, Jermaine Fowler, Dulce Sloan, Mara Wilson, Gastor Almonte, Justin Martindale, Jeena Bloom, Wayne Federman, Atsuko Okatsuka, Joanna Hausmann, Dylan Adler, and more.
Adult Sex Ed started as a funny idea that was really personal to me. I grew up in a really open home—my Mom was even a sex ed teacher for a while! In school, I received the opposite messages that were part of the curriculum at the time (we watched Philadelphia to learn that it you have sex, you’ll get AIDS). It used to be that educators thought that kids would learn all they needed to know about sex by watching animals mate. I am here to tell you that watching Planet Earth won’t prevent teen pregnancies. But wearing a floral vest might.
So this daughter of a sex ed teacher decided that she needed to challenge her own long-held beliefs the best way I know how…in front of a live audience. What started out as an exploration of adolescence became so much more. The vibe = sexy and funny, hopefully nothing like your grade school sex ed.
“All conversations that could arise from what we just heard could teach you a lot about a friend or a lover, even one you've known for years. And that could make sex a lot better…Sex Ed Is Back.”
