Hey readers! Jumping in on a Monday to talk about an issue that affects victims of natural disasters and ways you can help. Regular newsletter coming this Wednesday, as usual:)
Women and children are particularly vulnerable in humanitarian crises, and that includes the aftermath of natural disasters. Conflicts and disasters can leave people who menstruate without access to clean and safe products, and this often gets overlooked. As a good friend of mine wrote earlier today, Can you imagine losing everything and then being on your fucking period??
There are a lot of ways to help in L.A. and here are a few of them:
IF YOU DON’T LIVE IN L.A.
If you are out-of-town, the easiest way may be a donation. You can purchase the community sponsorship from The Period Company and they’ll make sure that support goes to Los Angeles.
Giving Generously also has a helpful Target Wishlist with hygiene products and other helpful items going directly to the people who need them.
SHIPPING OR DROPPING OFF PRODUCTS DIRECTLY
If you’d rather drop off yourself, follow Altadena Girls who are seeking new items for teens who have lost everything in the Eaton fire (not just period products). Remember being a teenager? Can you imagine not having the items that make you feel confident? This initiative was started by a 14-year old who knows what teens need right now. Follow their account for a wishlist and drop off locations updated daily!
Of course, there’s so much more that people need. So many people think L.A. is a town of celebrities, but these fires wiped out diverse neighborhoods of people who work really hard in all industries. I personally know people who have lost everything, most of them young families who only recently purchased their first homes. Of course, the animals need help too! There are many reputable organizations (and local mutual aid) that are seeking donations, so please make one that’s meaningful for you.
See ya Wednesday.
Adult Sex Ed comedically challenges why we think what we think about sex. In case you’re new, I’m Dani Faith Leonard, a comedy writer, film producer, and performer. In 2018, I started a comedy show called Adult Sex Ed and launched this newsletter last year. Each week, I take a fun deep dive into a topic that I’ve been researching. Want to know more?
